Impressive Vingegaard solos to second consecutive victory in Paris–Nice
# Vingegaard Claims Second Straight Victory in Paris-Nice
Jonas Vingegaard demonstrated his superior cycling prowess by securing his second consecutive stage win at the Paris-Nice, further solidifying his lead in the general classification.
“We had absolutely targeted this stage,” Vingegaard noted after the race. “The team rode a fantastic race. A strong breakaway went up the road, but the guys did a great job keeping them within reach. Everyone sacrificed themselves for me, so it’s nice to reward them with another stage victory.”
Stage five kicked off under sunny conditions with a challenging 206-kilometer course from Cormoranche-sur-Saône to Colombier-le-Vieux, featuring undulating terrain and daunting climbs. Vingegaard commenced the day as the new leader, following his impressive victory just days earlier.
The initial breakaway took time to form, eventually leading five riders to escape after more than an hour of racing. Team Visma | Lease a Bike led the peloton to maintain proximity to the leaders. Belgian cyclist Victor Campenaerts then made a critical move, bridging the gap to join the break alongside Ivan Romeo and Lorenzo Milesi.
As the race progressed to the steep climbs, Campenaerts showcased his endurance, paced himself effectively, and provided vital support for Vingegaard. Meanwhile, Team Visma | Lease a Bike kept an impressive tempo in the peloton, with Bruno Armirail working tirelessly.
The decisive moment came at the Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Muzols, where Vingegaard executed a strategic attack that left his competitors struggling to keep pace. Gradually increasing his lead, he rode to his second stage victory unchallenged, extending his overall lead to 3 minutes and 22 seconds over his nearest rival, Daniel Martínez.
“The Côte de Saint-Jean-de-Muzols was the climb where I wanted to launch my attack,” Vingegaard reflected. “For a moment it seemed like it wouldn’t happen because the attackers didn’t give up easily, but in the end I was still able to go there. The team positioned me perfectly, after which Victor made one final effort to launch me. I’m happy with this second stage win and my lead in the general classification. Now it’s about staying focused for three more days until Nice.”
As the race progresses, Vingegaard’s strategy and teamwork continue to shine, setting up an exhilarating conclusion to this year’s Paris-Nice.
