La Vuelta: A Tough Stage 6 for Remco Evenepoel
Remco Evenepoel, the overall leader of La Vuelta, braved difficult conditions on Pico del Buitre to limit his losses and maintain his position. Stage six proved to be challenging, with crashes, splits in the peloton, and numerous attacks causing chaos right from the start.
Despite the chaotic start, a large group of 42 riders managed to break away and establish a seven-minute gap between themselves and the peloton. Soudal Quick-Step had Mattia Cattaneo and Louis Vervaeke in this group, providing crucial support for Evenepoel on the final climb.
As attacks began to fly with four kilometers remaining, Evenepoel initially relied on Cattaneo to guide him. However, he eventually took matters into his own hands and set a steady tempo on the steep gradients of Pico del Buitre. Remaining composed allowed Evenepoel to limit the damage and finish the stage only half a minute behind his main rivals, preserving his slight advantage in the overall standings.
Reflecting on the challenging day, Evenepoel said, “I felt good, but I just couldn’t match the others when they went. I am glad I could limit the damage, riding at my own pace and making a controlled effort… Hopefully, this was my bad race of this race.”
La Vuelta continues with stage seven, promising more thrilling moments and intense competition for the race’s top contenders.
