Cyril Barthe just outside the podium in Poitiers

# Cyril Barthe Nears Victory at Tour Poitou-Charentes in Poitiers

In an exciting conclusion to the Tour Poitou-Charentes en Nouvelle Aquitaine, Cyril Barthe secured a commendable fourth place in the uphill sprint on Friday, marking his solid return to competitive racing after a challenging season. The final stage, spanning 185 kilometers, showcased the riders’ endurance and team strategies as they approached Poitiers.

The race featured an uphill finish, a challenging 800-meter stretch at a 5% gradient, repeated four times on the local circuit. Despite minor challenges, the day unfolded with a familiar rhythm. “We were careful not to miss a big move, but once the breakaway went, we focused on the sprint and on Cyril,” said team coach Philippe Mauduit. Initially, five riders found themselves in a breakaway, but their lead was quickly managed by the peloton. When the race entered the final lap, a five-rider attack emerged, including Enzo Paleni. “Unfortunately for him, there were two riders who weren’t working,” Philippe explained, noting the disorganization that ultimately led to their capture before the finish.

With two kilometers remaining, the stage was set for a showdown sprint, where Barthe and his team aimed to execute a perfect lead-out. “This time, the team managed to bring Cyril into the sprint,” Mauduit emphasized, commending the efforts of riders Eddy and Clément for their roles in the lead-up. Barthe himself was optimistic following the race: “I didn’t want to have any regrets and I wanted to make the best possible effort,” he stated. Despite being overtaken by three riders less than 50 meters from the finish, he expressed satisfaction with his performance and the team’s collective effort. “I’m still happy with this result to finish this week. I didn’t know where I was at the start, but the feelings slowly came back, and it was much better today.”

Philippe commented on Barthe’s performance: “It’s really satisfying to compete for the win, especially when it’s thanks to a team effort. The goal wasn’t achieved, but the attitude was the right one.” This race served as an important comeback for Barthe post-Tour de France, where he suffered an abandonment due to a concussion. His fourth-place finish indicated not just resilience but a reaffirmed racing spirit.

Other team members also made their mark, with Eliott Boulet and Enzo Paleni finishing ninth and tenth in the general classification. Philippe highlighted the positives of the week, noting Lewis Bower’s success in winning the intermediate sprints classification. “It’s a positive week, even if the results aren’t particularly impressive,” he concluded, pointing out the promising performances of young talents. “I think Enzo is gradually coming of age and that he will become an important member of the team.”

As the Tour Poitou-Charentes wraps up, the team leaves with a sense of accomplishment, buoyed by their competitive spirit and strategic execution that bodes well for future races.
