Sep Vanmarcke Ends Three-Year Drought with Victory at the Maryland Cycling Classic

Sep Vanmarcke tasted victory once again after a long wait, winning the inaugural edition of the Maryland Cycling Classic in a thrilling five-man sprint.

Vanmarcke’s win was a result of strong teamwork, with fellow Belgian Jenthe Biermans securing the sprint jersey for their team. Vanmarcke expressed relief and excitement about his victory, saying, “I’m feeling relieved… this win puts me back on track. It was hard to get back to a good level in the last few months… this is a nice way to get back.”

The race was intense from the start, with numerous attacks creating a strong 25-rider breakaway that included Vanmarcke, Biermans, and Krists Neilands. With IPT’s sprinter Giacomo Nizzolo in the main group, the team had multiple strategies to play. However, the race proved to be uncontrollable.

The breakaway group’s gap grew to more than four minutes, making it clear that the winner would come from the front group. The breakaway eventually split, forming a 12-rider leading group with IPT’s Belgians. Vanmarcke described the race as harder than expected, with rolling hills and constant demands. Despite the fatigue, Vanmarcke knew he had to stay in the mix to increase his chances of success.

As the race entered the city circuit in Baltimore, Vanmarcke and Biermans displayed their strength. On the second-to-last lap, another selection was made, and Vanmarcke found himself in the final five-rider group. Using his experience, Vanmarcke timed his sprint to perfection, securing a morale-boosting victory by out-sprinting his competitors.

Reflecting on the race, Vanmarcke said, “I was hoping to win with the team today… I think we played a good tactical game. To win here in America after a while is super nice.”

In addition to Vanmarcke’s triumph, Biermans sprinted to seventh place from the chase group and claimed the sprint jersey, making it a successful day for the IPT team in Maryland.
