Pello Bilbao Claims Third Place on Grueling Tour de France Stage

Spanish cyclist Pello Bilbao showcased his impressive skills at the Tour de France, finishing third on a demanding stage that tested riders with over 5,300 vertical meters and the challenging Col de la Loze. Bilbao, representing Bahrain Victorious, was part of a breakaway group that included Jack Haig, and together they were able to create a significant gap from the peloton.

As the breakaway split with just 13 km to go, Bilbao fought to maintain his position against strong contenders like Simon Yates and the stage winner, Gall. Despite losing some ground, Bilbao kept his pace steady and managed to hold off the yellow jersey, Vingegard, to secure a well-earned third place behind Simon Yates.

Reflecting on his performance, Bilbao praised his team’s efforts and expressed his satisfaction with their achievements, stating, “I’m so proud of the team, especially with Jack. He was impressive today. He deserved to win today’s stage.”

Bilbao’s excellent performance on this stage helped him climb to sixth place in the general classification, just 31 seconds behind Simon Yates. When asked about his chances of further improvement in the GC, Bilbao acknowledged the difficulty but remained optimistic, saying, “I think it’s going to be difficult…but if we have the legs, we will try.”

Unfortunately, not all riders had a successful day at the Tour de France. German sprinter Phil Bauhaus had to abandon the race, acknowledging the challenges he faced and expressing his disappointment at not being able to finish in Paris. However, Bauhaus remains hopeful for future opportunities, stating, “It’s sad not to make it to Paris…but I hope to return and get the opportunity again to finish the Tour in Paris.”

Despite the setbacks, riders like Pello Bilbao continue to demonstrate their strength and determination as the Tour de France unfolds. With each stage presenting new challenges, the race remains unpredictable, ensuring an exciting battle for the yellow jersey and a fierce competition among the athletes.
