# Van Aert Just Shy of Victory in Heusden-Zolder: A Thrilling Battle Ends in Narrow Defeat
Wout van Aert faced disappointment in Heusden-Zolder as he narrowly missed out on his first victory of the season. Reflecting on the tight finish, he stated, “I am disappointed. When it’s as close as it was today, it’s always a shame to lose.” The race turned into an intense battle, with Van Aert breaking away halfway through alongside Tibor Del Grosso. “I tried to put pressure on him in the final part of the course, but I couldn’t shake him off. I could feel that we were evenly matched,” he added.
Having started the race under challenging circumstances, Van Aert found himself chasing after an early setback. However, after three laps, he joined the lead group and quickly took control. Recognizing the danger posed by Van Aert, Del Grosso formed a duo with him, ultimately managing to pull ahead.
The climax of the race unfolded in a nail-biting two-man sprint, where Van Aert fell just short by mere millimeters. “There was a strong headwind on the finish road. It was difficult to start the sprint from the front,” he explained. In retrospect, he considered whether he should have surged earlier, but acknowledged the risk of allowing Del Grosso to use his momentum. He concluded, “In the end, he was just the stronger of the two.”
While it was a hard-fought contest, both riders showcased pure sportsmanship and competitive spirit, epitomizing what cycling is all about. “It was sport at its purest,” Van Aert remarked, encapsulating the thrill of the race.
