Stage 2 of the Giro d’Italia, which commenced in Burgas and concluded in Veliko Tarnovo, was momentarily disrupted by a heavy crash just over 20 kilometers from the finish. Despite an initially uneventful race, the scene soon turned chaotic. “It became a bit chaotic after that as well,” remarked Lennert Van Eetvelt regarding the abrupt changes in pace. “Would the race continue or not? The race suddenly stopped and then all of a sudden we restarted. There was a lot of confusion.”

As tensions mounted, the final climb saw Jonas Vingegaard launch an attack. Van Eetvelt and Giulio Pellizzari were the only riders able to keep pace with the formidable Vingegaard, underscoring the strength of the competitors. “But those guys were incredibly strong. Even on the descent, I struggled to stay with Vingegaard,” Van Eetvelt acknowledged.

In an effort to remain ahead of the dwindling peloton, Van Eetvelt hoped that both Vingegaard and Pellizzari would maintain their pace to secure bonus seconds. “I was counting a bit on those two GC riders continuing to work for at least the bonus seconds, so that we could stay away. We were riding for the pink jersey, and I gambled wrong,” he explained. Unfortunately, the trio’s pace dropped as they exchanged glances, allowing the rest of the field to catch up.

Despite the missed opportunity, Van Eetvelt remained optimistic. “At the start of this Giro, I said there would be 15 opportunities for me over the next three weeks. This was one of them. It’s a shame that this one slipped away, but above all I’ll remember the strong legs I was able to show here.” Ultimately, Van Eetvelt finished in 13th place, leaving him with a mix of disappointment and pride.

As the Giro d’Italia progresses, Van Eetvelt’s tenacity and performance serve as a reminder of his potential to contend for future stages.
