Tiesj Benoot Finishes Just Outside Top Ten in GP de Montréal
Belgian cyclist Tiesj Benoot narrowly missed out on a top-ten finish in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, a one-day race that took place in challenging weather conditions. Despite his disappointment, Benoot expressed satisfaction with his performance and looked ahead to the upcoming races.
The race covered over 200 kilometers and included three challenging climbs, making it well-suited for climbers. Benoot, riding for Jumbo-Visma, managed to stay with the leading group for most of the race. However, in the final local lap, he fell behind and finished in 11th place.
Reflecting on the race, Benoot stated, “I needed just a few percentage points more to ride for the podium…The harsh weather conditions combined with the difficult course made it a race for the climbers.” He added, “In the last ten kilometers, I rode at the limit. When Yates attacked, I couldn’t follow.”
Despite narrowly missing out on a better result, Benoot expressed optimism about his form towards the end of the season. He noted that it had been six years since he last participated in these races in Canada and described it as a great experience. He also highlighted the upcoming 2026 World Championships in Montréal as a significant event to look forward to.
Benoot concluded by saying, “I noticed in the last two races that I’m in good shape towards the end of the season. That is a pleasant observation. Hopefully, I can end the cycling year well in the coming weeks.”
The Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal was won by Adam Yates, riding for UAE Team Emirates, with Pavel Sivakov from INEOS Grenadiers in second place and Alex Aranburu from Movistar Team in third place.
