The 39-year-old Belgian has spent the last five seasons guiding his former team, Lotto, where he honed his skills in various directing and technical performance roles. His extensive background in the Classics has seen him play crucial roles during major races, and he has had the honor of being a reliable domestique for cycling legends such as Tom Boonen.

In expressing his enthusiasm about the new position, Maes stated, “I’m happy to join such a motivated and professional environment. I’m ready for the challenge of helping the team achieve its goals and I look forward to working with the staff and riders.”

Milan Eržen, Managing Director of Bahrain Victorious, also weighed in on Maes’s hiring, highlighting his expertise: “Nikolas brings a wealth of experience to our Sports Director group, particularly for the Classics season. His knowledge will be invaluable during the spring campaign, and we’re confident he will play an important role in helping our riders deliver strong results.”

As Bahrain Victorious gears up for the upcoming season, the team is optimistic that Maes’s experience and leadership will contribute significantly to their aspirations on the road.
