Matej Mohorič Secures Third Tour de France Stage with Dramatic Finish
Matej Mohorič of Team Bahrain Victorious emerged victorious in the 19th stage of the Tour de France, marking his third career stage win. Mohorič’s triumph also ensured a third stage victory for his team in this year’s edition, following the successes of Pello Bilbao and Wout Poels. Known for his ability to win from breakaways, the Slovenian rider demonstrated patience in making his way to the winning move.
The breakaway group initially consisted of riders like Jack Haig, but it later grew to include over 30 cyclists, including Mohorič and Ben O’Connor. The peloton allowed the break to go as they sat up, setting the stage for an intense battle for the stage win. With 30 kilometers to go, Mohorič made a daring attack alongside O’Connor and Stage 18 winner Kasper Asgreen.
Working together, the trio quickly established a gap of 30 seconds, ultimately proving to be the decisive move of the race. In the sprint to the finish line, O’Connor launched his attack early, while Mohorič closely followed the wheel of Asgreen. In a nail-biting finish, the photo finish confirmed Mohorič as the stage winner, clinching it by just millimeters.
Reflecting on his victory, Mohorič expressed his emotions, saying, “It’s super emotional for me. It’s been a hard month for us all, and it’s been a rollercoaster. This has been an incredibly hard race, and the level is hard. It’s the best bike race in the world with the best bike riders.”
Mohorič also acknowledged the efforts of his fellow riders, stating, “You are suffering and struggling to hold the wheels some days. When I get in the right place, I try to exploit my opportunities. I went away with great riders, and even though Ben knew he wasn’t the strongest in the sprint, he tried, and we worked well together.”
While recognizing Asgreen’s strength and deserving performance, Mohorič highlighted the sacrifices made by riders throughout the Tour de France, expressing his wish for each rider to have the opportunity to win a stage. He also extended gratitude to his teammates and the Bahrain Victorious staff for their support in achieving their collective dream.
The dramatic finish to the 19th stage showcased Mohorič’s exceptional skill and determination, solidifying his status as a respected rider in the world of professional cycling.
