Belgian cyclist Sylvain Moniquet, a member of the ProTeam, has been sidelined for the season opener due to a positive Covid-19 test.
The ProTeam announced on Monday that Moniquet had tested positive for the virus, forcing him to miss the upcoming race.
“Unfortunately, Sylvain has contracted Covid-19 and will not be able to join us for the season opener,” the team manager stated. “We wish him a swift and full recovery.”
This setback will undoubtedly be disappointing for Moniquet, who was looking forward to starting the season on a high note.
Moniquet is not the first cyclist to be affected by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, several races were canceled or postponed due to the global health crisis.
The ProTeam is taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of its riders amidst the pandemic.
“Our team follows strict protocols and takes the health of our athletes, staff, and the public very seriously,” the team manager emphasized. “We have been conducting regular tests and closely monitoring the situation.”
The ProTeam is hopeful that Moniquet will recover quickly and be able to join the team for future races.
As for the season opener, the team will be working with its remaining riders to make the necessary adjustments and maintain a competitive edge.
“While it’s unfortunate that Sylvain cannot race with us, we have a strong team that is capable of stepping up and delivering strong performances,” the team manager commented. “We are ready to tackle the challenges ahead.”
The ProTeam’s next race is scheduled for next week, giving Moniquet some time to recover and potentially make a comeback.
Meanwhile, the team will continue to prioritize the health and safety of its riders and staff as they navigate through these uncertain times.
