Merlier Secures Podium Finish at Tirreno-Adriatico Stage in Follonica
The Belgian rider, Tim Merlier, continues his impressive streak with another podium finish at the “Race of the Two Seas.”
Tim Merlier celebrated his eighth top-three finish of the season in Follonica, where the stage finish took place for the “Tirreno-Adriatico” race for the second consecutive year. Following his successful campaign in the Middle East with five victories, this marked his first bunch sprint of the year on European soil, showcasing his prowess on the road.
Similar to the recent Paris-Nice event, the peloton in Italy had a relatively calm stage until the final kilometers, intensifying the race for a thrilling finale. The Soudal Quick-Step team put in a solid effort throughout the day, with Josef Cerny leading the pack and later supported by Kasper Asgreen and Julian Alaphilippe, who played a crucial role in the local lap with impressive performances, setting the stage for their sprinter, Tim Merlier, to shine.
Although faced with a tricky right-hand corner towards the end, Merlier managed to navigate it smoothly, positioning himself in second place. The 31-year-old then executed a strong sprint from a distance and secured the second spot behind Jasper Philipsen of team Alpecin-Deceuninck, placing him in the running for the points jersey.
