Giro d’Italia: Vincenzo Nibali Takes Fourth Place in Turin
Vincenzo Nibali, the Astana Qazaqstan Team leader, displayed an impressive performance in the Giro d’Italia by securing a strong fourth place finish in Turin. Nibali showcased his exceptional climbing abilities, crossing the line just behind solo winner Simon Yates in a small group of general classification (GC) contenders.
“The day has turned out to be a tough one, because the pace proposed by Bora was a very high one. Also, it was a very hot day, and it was quite challenging to eat and drink on a nervous and tricky circuit in Turin. The pace of the race was very high both on the climbs and on the descents, so it was really tough,” – said Vincenzo Nibali.
The race started with several attacks from the peloton, but it was Joe Dombrowski who made the first significant move on the Il Pilonetto climb. Eventually, a group formed and gained a three-minute advantage over the peloton. However, on the first climb of Superga, Nibali and a reduced group of GC contenders managed to catch the break.
Nibali made his move on the second climb of Superga, forming a leading group of four riders. After a series of attacks, the four riders managed to break away and create a gap to the rest of the peloton. In the end, Simon Yates emerged as the stage winner after launching a late attack, while Nibali finished 15 seconds behind Yates alongside Jai Hindley and Richard Carapaz.
“Yes, I am quite satisfied with the stage. I’d like to fight for a stage win, but I knew it would be difficult. I lost some time on Etna, but I was still there, and I knew that the rivals consider me as a dangerous rider for the GC, while to win from a small group of favorites is always hard,” – added Vincenzo Nibali.
Richard Carapaz moved into the race lead and claimed the pink jersey, while Nibali secured the 8th position in the General Classification, trailing Carapaz by 2 minutes and 58 seconds.
