Mohorič continues winning streak with victory at Renewi Tour in Belgium
Matej Mohorič added another victory to his impressive winning streak on Sunday, winning the closing stage of the Renewi Tour in Belgium. The hilly 187-kilometer race ended with a reduced sprint, in which Mohorič overtook some of the strongest riders on the startlist. Reflecting on his win, Mohorič expressed his satisfaction with his current condition and his enjoyment of being on the bike. He also commented on the controversy surrounding the race, stating that clearer rules and decisions made in advance would be beneficial for the peloton.
Regarding the race’s challenging finish, Mohorič said, “It was such a complicated finish that the riders didn’t want to take the risk of crashing when contesting the finish. It was a tough call…we need to respect the organisation; we knew what the course was months ago, so this decision should have been taken before and not during the race.” Despite the controversy, Mohorič made an impressive move to attack alone 17 kilometers from the finish. However, his attempt was covered by another rider, and the front group eventually came back together. Mohorič then refocused and went all in for the stage win, ultimately emerging victorious. He credited his team for their support throughout the race.
Following Mohorič’s success in Belgium, Phil Bauhaus of Bahrain Victorious achieved second place on the final stage of the Deutschland Tour in Germany. The team ended the tour with three top-five results. However, Sports Director Enrico Poitschke expressed that the team could have achieved better results. Despite the setbacks, Bahrain Victorious was able to secure a podium finish on the last day of the race, with Bauhaus performing well in the challenging sprint stage.
Overall, Mohorič’s winning streak and Bahrain Victorious’ strong performances highlight their prowess in the pro peloton. With five victories in the last 70 days, Mohorič is undoubtedly one of the form riders in the sport.
