Vingegaard adds the Volta a Catalunya to his palmares
# Vingegaard Triumphs at Volta a Catalunya, Securing Second Stage Race Win of the Season
In a remarkable display of strength and skill, Jonas Vingegaard clinched victory at the Volta a Catalunya, further solidifying his status as one of cycling’s elite. After taking the lead in the general classification with an impressive win on the first mountain top finish, Vingegaard reinforced his dominance by finishing solo in Queralt just a day later. With a commanding lead of 1 minute and 22 seconds over his nearest competitor, Lenny Martinez, the Danish cyclist’s overall victory was all but guaranteed.
The final stage, reminiscent of tradition, took place in Barcelona where riders tackled the challenging Montjuïc circuit seven times. Despite facing significant pressure from the Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe team, which tested his limits, Vingegaard upheld his unbeaten status. “The Red Bull – Bora – Hansgrohe riders really put the team and me under pressure today. Their high pace left me isolated in the final stretch, and I had to defend myself as best I could. Fortunately, my legs felt strong and I was able to fend off the attacks. Towards the end, I wasn’t so much focused on the stage win anymore, but was thinking only of securing the overall victory,” Vingegaard shared after crossing the line alongside the race winner, Brady Gilmore.
Declaring his satisfaction with the week, he added, “It’s been a really great week. We came here with the ambition to win stages and the general classification, and we’ve succeeded. I’m absolutely delighted with that.”
Following his earlier victory at Paris-Nice, this marks Vingegaard’s second stage race win this season, providing him with a significant boost in confidence as he prepares for the upcoming Giro d’Italia. “It means a lot to start the season in this way. It gives me a huge boost of confidence and motivation for everything that lies ahead,” he noted.
