Veenhoven misses out on podium spot at Omloop van het Hageland
# Veenhoven Just Misses Podium at Omloop van het Hageland
In a close contest at the Omloop van het Hageland, Nienke Veenhoven and her Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women squad faced a challenging race day following their previous event at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Competing in the eighteenth edition of this grueling race through Flemish Brabant, the team navigated a demanding course of 141 kilometers, which featured both cobbled sections and steep hills.
The race was largely defined by an early breakaway led by three riders: Marta Lach, Karlijn Swinkels, and Flora Perkins. Despite their early advantage, the trio found themselves under constant pressure from Veenhoven’s team, who raced strategically in the peloton. The leaders maintained their lead until the final kilometers, at which point the peloton closed the gap and prepared for a dramatic bunch sprint.
Reflecting on her performance, Veenhoven remarked, “From the start, we were well positioned in the race. The breakaway never gained a big advantage, but they still managed to stay away for a long time. In the finale, my teammates did a great job. Among others, Viktória and Katharina rode strong pulls at the front to close the gap. Daniek and Imogen made sure I was well positioned going into the sprint.”
Unfortunately, in the sprint, Veenhoven felt she was “a bit too hesitant, which meant I reacted too late.” Ultimately, this cost her a chance at the podium, as she finished just shy of a top-three spot. “It’s a shame I couldn’t reward all the hard work with a victory, but I’m proud of how we presented ourselves,” she added, emphasizing the team spirit and effort displayed throughout the race.
As the team continues to build momentum this season, Veenhoven’s strong performance, despite falling short of the podium, highlights the resilience and collaborative effort integral to cycling. The team will undoubtedly take this experience into their upcoming races, eager for redemption.
