Slippery conditions and crashes challenge Team Jumbo-Visma in Vuelta a España
Team Jumbo-Visma faced a tough second stage in the Vuelta a España as inclement weather caused changes to the race. The start was moved back and the times for the general classification (GC) riders were recorded nine kilometers before the finish. This decision was praised by sports director Merijn Zeeman, who called it a wise and courageous move.
The slippery roads proved to be a challenge for the team, with leader Primoz Roglic involved in a crash and Jonas Vingegaard suffering two punctures. Despite these setbacks, both riders were able to rejoin the peloton without any major issues. The team managed to guide them safely to the nine-kilometer line, where the GC times were recorded.
Zeeman commended the riders for taking action and having a voice in decisions that prioritize their safety. He noted that the risk of crashes was high and it was important for them to come together as a team. Looking ahead, Zeeman expressed optimism for the coming weeks and expected a good battle in the remaining stages.
Although they currently trail Remco Evenepoel by 26 seconds in the overall standings, Zeeman remained confident and believed there were still plenty of opportunities to make up the time. The team will continue to strategize and adapt to the challenging conditions they might face in the future.
In the second stage, the stage win went to Andreas Kron of Lotto Dstny, who crossed the finish line alone. Team Jumbo-Visma riders, including Vingegaard, Robert Gesink, Wilco Kelderman, Attila Valter, Sepp Kuss, Primož Roglic, Jan Tratnik, and Dylan van Baarle, finished together in the bunch.
