Decent results, but uncompleted goal

# Tour Alsace: Mixed Results Leave Groupama-FDJ with Unmet Goals

The Tour Alsace wrapped up this past Sunday, mirroring the mixed outcomes that “La Conti” Groupama-FDJ experienced from the outset. Eliott Boulet claimed an eighth-place finish on Saturday, while Maxime Decomble barely secured a top-10 finish overall in the final stage. However, despite their efforts, the French team fell short of the aspirations they had set for the week.

The competition’s dynamics solidified at the peak of La Planche des Belles Filles on Friday, where Decomble was positioned thirteenth going into the final two days. A less challenging stage awaited on Saturday, covering 133 kilometers from Ferrette to Altkirch. “The stage was made for the sprinters, even though the start of the race was quite hard and actually made a selection from the back,” commented Jérôme Gannat. “Maxime even broke away with a group of twelve riders at one point, but the yellow jersey reacted, and then five riders broke away.”

Despite fierce competition, the breakaway struggled to maintain an advantage. “The rain slowed the peloton’s ambitions, and the gap grew again with about twenty kilometers to go,” Gannat noted. In the end, the leading trio maintained their lead to the finish, crossing the line ahead of the peloton by fourteen seconds. Dolven took the win, while Boulet finished eighth and Blake Agnoletto came in fourteenth. “Eliott was our main card, and he finished fifth in the sprint alongside the best,” Gannat added, expressing some level of satisfaction with Boulet’s performance.

As the tour proceeded into Sunday, expectations shifted dramatically with a grueling stage that boasted 3,500 meters of elevation gain. “We thought the breakaway would go quite early, but it was again a fight for sixty kilometers,” Gannat explained. A series of attacks unfolded before Mont Saint-Odile but the peloton remained hot on the breakaway’s heels.

The favored cyclists made their moves nearing the final climb. “Aubin Sparfel attacked, Maxime tried to close the gap but lacked a bit of punch to follow him,” Gannat shared. This performance ultimately left Decomble in thirteenth position for the stage and narrowly secured him a tenth place overall—a result he and the team view as below their initial target of a top-five finish.

“It’s below our initial goal, which was the top five,” concluded Gannat. “In the end, the gaps were mainly made on La Planche, and the twenty seconds he lost there, on the last ramp, ruined that objective. The results are mixed because it was perhaps possible to do better.” He acknowledged the growing competitiveness at the U23 level, yet reiterated that progress is still necessary for the team to make a mark on the WorldTour stage. “There are still steps to take in order to be more present as a team in the decisive moments,” he noted.

As Groupama-FDJ reflects on their performance, the team is left with valuable lessons learned and a renewed determination to improve in future competitions.
