Lennert Van Eetvelt Aims to Develop Climbing Abilities in Pro Debut

Each year, the Lotto Dstny Development program introduces young riders to its professional team. This year, Liam Slock and Lennert Van Eetvelt are set to join the Lotto Dstny ProTeam. Van Eetvelt, a 21-year-old Belgian from Binkom, recently discussed his journey and goals in an interview.

Reflecting on his time in the U23 ranks, Van Eetvelt described it as a “beautiful but also really bizarre period” due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He credited the Development Team and the familiar environment within Lotto Dstny for his smooth transition to the professional level.

Van Eetvelt had a successful 2022 season, with notable performances in big races. However, he expressed his pride in his consistent performances across various events, saying, “I proved that I could perform at the highest level.”

When asked about his future focus, Van Eetvelt stated his ambition to further develop his climbing abilities. He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the support and guidance he receives from Lotto Dstny.

The expansion of the performance team at Lotto Dstny, which now includes trainers and nutritionists, has been beneficial for Van Eetvelt. As a climber, he emphasized the importance of strict nutrition and training plans. He also mentioned that altitude camps are being planned for the upcoming season, offering him a new training experience.

Van Eetvelt’s professional career will begin at the Mallorca Challenge. Although he expects the races in Mallorca to be intense, he aims to adapt to the pro level and make a strong impression. As for specific goals for his first pro season, Van Eetvelt said, “I first want to adapt to the pro level and show myself as much as possible during the races.”

When it comes to training, Van Eetvelt, being a Belgian climber, finds the options quite limited in Belgium. Therefore, he often heads to Tenerife, with its long climbs and favorable weather, making it his preferred training destination.

In response to a question about his dream race victory, Van Eetvelt chose the Tour de France if a Grand Tour counts. As a climber, he considers the Tour de France to be the pinnacle of his aspirations.

Overall, Lennert Van Eetvelt is excited for his pro debut and looks forward to further developing his climbing abilities within the professional cycling world.
