Brennan narrowly misses top ten in Boucles de la Mayenne
# Brennan Falls Short of Top Ten in Boucles de la Mayenne
In a challenging stage of the Boucles de la Mayenne, Team Visma | Lease a Bike managed to maintain control of the peloton, but young rider Matthew Brennan narrowly missed securing a top-ten finish. During the final burst of the race that culminated in a bunch sprint, Brennan found himself positioned too tightly and was ultimately unable to unleash his potential. He crossed the finish line in eleventh place.
Reflecting on the day’s events, Brennan remarked, “It was actually quite a calm day, but usually that means it’s full gas at the end. I chose to go on the left side and was around the top ten heading into the final corner, but unfortunately the door closed in front of me. These kinds of things happen in a sprint. It’s frustrating that it went this way today because I was feeling really good.”
Despite the missed opportunity, sports director Robert Wagner expressed satisfaction with the team’s collective effort amidst the tense finale. “Matthew got boxed in today, so he never really got the chance to sprint,” Wagner explained. He commended the team for their strong performance throughout the local laps, highlighting the contributions of Ashlin Barry, a young rider from the Development Team, who executed the team’s strategy effectively by entering the final corner in first position.
Looking ahead, confidence within the squad remains high as they prepare for a demanding hilly stage ahead, which stretches over 215 kilometers. The team anticipates a fierce contest in the upcoming stages of the competition, aiming to capitalize on the learnings from this stage to achieve better results.
