Breakaway riders hold their ground, Laporte loses leader’s jersey in second stage of Ruta del Sol
# Breakaway Triumph: Ivan Romeo Claims Leader’s Jersey in Stage Two of Ruta del Sol
In an exhilarating second stage of the Ruta del Sol, riders faced a demanding route from Torrox to Otura, featuring a crucial challenge in the form of the 25-kilometre Puerto de la Cabra climb. Following the previous day’s opening victory, Christophe Laporte of Team Visma | Lease a Bike donned the leader’s yellow jersey but struggled to maintain his position against the fierce pace set by competitors.
Despite his team’s efforts—successfully reining him back into the peloton after a challenging climb—Laporte was unable to secure victory. The race saw a dramatic turn when Ivan Romeo and Andreas Leknessund broke away, gaining an impressive lead of three minutes. Throughout the latter part of the stage, several teams, including Team Visma | Lease a Bike, intensified their attempts to catch the leaders. Nevertheless, Romeo and Leknessund held on to their lead, with Romeo ultimately crossing the finish line first, earning him the leader’s jersey from Laporte.
Marc Reef, sports director for Team Visma | Lease a Bike, remarked on the day’s challenges: “It was a tough day. On the Puerto de la Cabra, the peloton was shattered to pieces, and only Matisse Van Kerckhove managed to keep up at the front. The rest stayed with Christophe and tried to bring him back to the peloton.” Reef praised the efforts of the breakaway riders, stating, “We did everything we could to win this stage, but unfortunately we didn’t succeed. Hats off to Romeo and Leknessund. If several teams failed to close the gap, they more than deserved it.”
Despite the setback, Reef remained optimistic, noting Laporte’s resilience: “The fact that Laporte remained at the front in the second part of the stage was a good sign. It shows that he is in good shape and can keep up on a course like this.” Looking ahead, Reef expressed confidence in upcoming stages, reminding fans that “tomorrow’s stage has a difficult start, but the finish should be doable. We will once again do everything we can to get involved in the battle for the stage victory.”
As the competition intensifies, Laporte currently sits sixth in the general classification, hopeful for future stages as the Ruta del Sol unfolds.
