Neilson Powless Motivated to Make Mark in Maryland Cycling Classic

Neilson Powless, America’s top professional cyclist, is eager to return to the Maryland Cycling Classic and build on his podium finish from last year. As a multi-day specialist, Powless has established himself as one of the world’s best climbers and remains ranked in the Top 20 this late in the season.

Reflecting on the 2022 event, Powless expressed his excitement to race on American soil again, praising the challenging but enjoyable course and the enthusiastic crowds. He stated, “I can’t wait to come back and race next year.” With last year’s champion, Sep Vanmarcke, retiring, Powless sees an opportunity to claim the title for himself at this year’s race.

Coming from a family of athletes, Powless has a strong support system behind him. His sister Shayna is also an elite cyclist, while his mother Jen Allred represented Guam in Olympic marathons. Furthermore, Powless is proud to be the first American Indian to compete in the Tour de France.

Powless had an impressive season, winning a major race in France and achieving a top 5 finish in the prestigious Tour of Flanders. Additionally, he donned the polka-dot jersey in this year’s Tour de France, a childhood dream for him as a professional cyclist.

While Powless came close to securing a podium finish at the World Championships road race, he ultimately finished 11th. Now, he is eager to perform well in his home country at the Maryland Cycling Classic. This year’s race holds even more significance for Powless, as he and his wife Chae are expecting their first child in October, and the race falls on his birthday.

If Powless and his team can secure a victory at the Maryland Cycling Classic on September 3rd, it would be a fitting conclusion to his exceptional 2023 campaign and a memorable birthday present for the soon-to-be father.
