Træen Retains La Roja After Stage 8 at La Vuelta

# Træen Maintains La Roja Ahead of Challenging Stage 9 at La Vuelta

Torstein Træen will don the leader’s jersey for a third consecutive day after successfully navigating Stage 8 of the 2025 Vuelta a España. The eighth stage, covering 163.5 km from Monzón Templario to Zaragoza, was initially forecasted to bring strong winds and potential echelons, yet it unfolded more simply than anticipated.

This stage featured the flattest terrain of this year’s edition, devoid of categorised climbs, allowing a three-man breakaway to be managed effectively by the peloton. Riders from Bahrain Victorious took on the crucial role of shielding Træen, reintegrating the escapees with around 20 km left in the race.

Zaragoza ultimately set the stage for a bunch sprint, where Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin–Deceuninck) clinched the victory, followed closely by Ethan Vernon (IPT) and Arne Merit (IWA).

With solid support from his teammates, Træen heads into Stage 9 with his overall lead intact. Tomorrow’s route stretches 195 km from Alfaro to Estación de Esquí de Valdezcaray, culminating in a demanding summit finish that promises to shake up the general classification before the first rest day.

Reflecting on the day’s events, Træen stated: “Tomorrow will be a bit like yesterday. The question is, ‘can I hold on to the red jersey or not?’. It’s basically about seeing how I compare against the other GC contenders. If they decide to go full gas, maybe I won’t be able to follow. Today was a relaxing stage, and I enjoyed the jersey a bit. In the final, the team helped me super well, and I’m really grateful for what they did. We arrived safely without any problems. Now we’ll see how it goes tomorrow on the last climb.”

Team’s Lead Sports Director Franco Pellizotti commended the collective effort, while expressing cautious optimism for the challenges ahead: “Today we tried to recover as much energy as possible after yesterday’s big effort. On paper it was a day for the sprinters, but we always had to stay vigilant in case of echelons. The boys rode well, always keeping position, and in the final they worked to keep Torstein out of trouble. Tomorrow we will try to defend the leadership as we did yesterday. It won’t be easy, but the guys are motivated and Torstein is in great shape, so we will fight until the last metre to defend the red jersey.”

As the race progresses, all eyes will be on Træen and the Bahrain Victorious team as they prepare for the impending climb and the ensuing showdown with their rivals.
