Lenny Martinez Makes an Impressive Debut in Andorra on Day Three of the Vuelta
On the third day of the Vuelta a Espana, Lenny Martinez, a young climber from Groupama-FDJ, showcased his talent by finishing in seventh place on the challenging summit finish in Arinsal, Andorra. Despite several attacks from the race’s top riders in the final kilometers, Martinez stayed with the favorites and moved up to third place overall. This remarkable performance also earned him the best young rider’s jersey for stage four.
The stage featured a difficult route with the ascent of the Coll d’Ordino and the steep final climb of Arinsal. The Groupama-FDJ team initially wanted to go for the stage win or the red jersey through a breakaway. However, they missed the breakaway and had to focus on supporting Martinez. Benoit Vaugrenard, the team’s assistant sports director, explained, “We thought that if there was a solid breakaway, it would be good to have Michael, or even Rudy or Romain in there… It was disappointing to miss the break, but we didn’t have too many regrets either.”
Martinez’s teammates played a crucial role in positioning him for success. Clément Davy and Lorenzo Germani helped him during the ascent of Coll d’Ordino, and Rudy Molard provided support before the final climb. Martinez managed to stay with the main favorites of the race and finished strong in the sprint. Reflecting on his performance, Martinez said, “The day went well, the whole team helped me and put me in perfect conditions, then it came down to the legs in the final… It’s the Vuelta, so I’m happy with my performance.”
Thanks to his impressive debut and the team’s strong start in the race, Martinez now sits in third place overall, just eleven seconds behind the current leader, Remco Evenepoel. Vaugrenard expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “Lenny did a great climb, he paced himself well and managed to follow the group who fought for the win… It’s a good day for us.”
As an added accomplishment, Martinez will start stage four wearing the white jersey, symbolizing the best young rider, instead of Evenepoel who currently holds the red jersey. Looking ahead, Vaugrenard emphasized the team’s determination to continue progressing, saying, “It is good for their confidence. We’ll keep moving forward, slowly but surely.”
Stage four will bring the peloton to Tarragona for what is expected to be the first bunch sprint of the Vuelta.
