Derek Gee’s Memorable Debut in Paris-Roubaix
Canadian cyclist Derek Gee had a rollercoaster of a debut in the Paris-Roubaix race, experiencing both the “coolest” and “worst” moments of his life. A mechanical problem on the iconic Arenberg sector dashed his breakaway chances, forcing him to battle on alone for 90 kilometers. Despite the setback, Gee was determined to finish the race and crossed the line in 135th position, the last rider to make the time cut. This unforgettable experience is just the beginning of Gee’s journey on the mythical cobblestones.
Gee reflected on his experience, saying, “It was an amazing experience for sure… I had this surreal moment of knowing ‘oh I’m in the breakaway at Roubaix, that’s really, really cool’.” Despite the disappointment of the mechanical issue, Gee remained determined, stating, “There was no way I wasn’t finishing. I knew I was going to make it, even not knowing if I would be in the time limit or not.”
Team leader Sep Vanmarcke also faced challenges during the race, missing a key move and encountering a crash and chain issue on the Arenberg sector. Despite dreaming of a podium finish, Vanmarcke had to settle for 16th place. He expressed his frustration, saying, “I was dreaming about the podium today and didn’t know if it would be possible but I had really good legs. I think with these legs, a top-ten would have been very possible but I didn’t have the chance.”
The IPT team faced multiple setbacks throughout the race, but all seven riders made it to the finish line. Despite not achieving their desired results, the team felt a sense of relief and accomplishment. The challenging debut in Paris-Roubaix will be a chapter in their cycling journey, with many more stories to write on the fabled cobblestones in the future.
