A tireless Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet secures a final top 10
# Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet’s Tenacious Effort Earns Top 10 Finish at the Tour of the Basque Country
In a display of relentless determination, Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet made his mark at the Tour of the Basque Country, securing a top 10 finish in the grueling final stage. Despite the daunting weather conditions this Saturday and having participated in three previous breakaways, the Norman climber once again rose to the occasion, crossing the line in tenth place and climbing to 11th in the overall standings.
With just 135 kilometers remaining, and an upwards elevation gain of 3,000 meters, the final day was set to be unforgiving. The incessant rain and much colder temperatures created an already challenging course. Early on, a breakaway of around thirty riders formed, and true to form, Martin-Guyonnet was among them. His team director, Benoît Vaugrenard, noted, “We didn’t really believe in the break yesterday, as it was the hardest stage of the week, but we felt the break could go far today, and Guillaume was still motivated.”
The race unfolded under treacherous conditions, and Vaugrenard revealed Martin-Guyonnet’s affinity for such weather: “On top of that, the stage took place in torrential rain, and Guillaume enjoys those kinds of conditions.” The strategic depth of the race was illustrated by the presence of five riders from Uno-X, who pushed hard for their teammate Johannessen.
Throughout the day, Martin-Guyonnet remained tactically astute within the large breakaway. “The idea was for him to hang on in that group as long as possible, and then let the legs do the talking in the final,” Vaugrenard explained. As the race progressed, the break thinned out, leading into a tough final climb, during which Andrew August made a daring solo break.
Despite battling the cold, Martin-Guyonnet demonstrated bravery and skill, ultimately finishing just 1:33 behind the stage winner and nearly three minutes ahead of the main group of favorites. His performance allowed him to climb six places in the general classification, concluding the race in 11th overall.
Reflecting on the week, Vaugrenard praised Martin-Guyonnet’s consistency: “Guillaume was in the three breakaways that made it to the finish this week, and he achieved three top 10s.” He noted the importance of regaining confidence after a challenging stint at the Volta a Catalunya, stating, “This Tour of the Basque Country really puts him back on track for what’s next.”
While acknowledging the team’s struggles with crashes and illness, Vaugrenard expressed satisfaction with their overall performance: “We knew there would be opportunities after the second day, and we didn’t miss them. We’re still lacking a little something to go for the win, but at least we were active.”
Guillaume Martin-Guyonnet’s fortitude and strategic racing throughout the Tour of the Basque Country embody the spirit of competitive cycling, providing a robust foundation as he looks ahead to future challenges.
