In the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia Women, a breakaway of three riders initially surged ahead but was swiftly reeled back in by the peloton. For Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women, the day was characterized by solid yet unspectacular cycling as they navigated a controlled race that ramped up considerably in the local circuit’s finale.
Although the team maintained a strategic position for most of the day, the crucial sprint train they aimed to establish disintegrated in the closing kilometers. Nienke Veenhoven was unable to join the fight for victory, leaving Margaux Vigié as the top finisher for the team in 16th place, just shy of the top ten.
“It was sprinting after every corner,” remarked rider Femke de Vries, reflecting on the intense conclusion to the stage. She described the day as “slow and warm” until the racers hit the local circuit. “Margaux and Daniek helped me a lot, I was able to stay in the wheels the whole time,” she added.
Looking ahead, the team is preparing for stage two, which covers 156 kilometers and offers a different kind of challenge. “It should be a less hectic day since it’s not a city circuit like today. I’m looking forward to the next few days,” said de Vries.
