Zambanini Sprints to Second on Giro Stage 18

# Zambanini Claims Second in Thrilling Giro d’Italia Stage 18

Edoardo Zambanini showcased his growing prowess with a remarkable second-place finish in Stage 18 of the Giro d’Italia, enhancing Team Bahrain Victorious’ reputation in the prestigious race. The 171km stage spanned from Fai della Paganella to Pieve di Soligo, featuring a challenging route with little flat terrain and demanding climbs.

The race commenced with a frenetic pace, making it difficult for teams to control the field. Following a chaotic opening, a small breakaway was initially allowed to form, but the peloton quickly managed the gap, reeling in the escapees within the final 25km.

As the stage progressed, the intensity ramped up significantly. After passing through Valdobbiadene, riders tackled several short climbs, including Combai, Tarzo, and the final ascent of Ca’ del Poggio within 10km of the finish. This last climb presented opportunities for attacks, yet the group reassembled before the final sprint into Pieve di Soligo.

Paul Magnier from Soudal Quick-Step claimed victory, while Zambanini finished strong in second, with Jonathan Milan from Lidl-Trek rounding out the podium. For Zambanini, who has had a tumultuous start to the Giro, this finish serves as a testament to his resilience and strategic acumen.

Reflecting on the race, Zambanini stated, “Today was a nice stage for me… I think having my friends and my parents there gave me a bit more energy for this last part of the Giro. It was a Giro that didn’t start very well for me because, after the crash, I had some problems. But day by day, with the help of the team, we fixed everything.”

The young Italian rider highlighted his familiarity with the course’s finale, saying, “I know I have a good sprint if we arrive in a reduced group… It is an explosive finale that really suits me.” Despite narrowly missing victory to Magnier, whom he acknowledged as “one of the strongest sprinters in the world,” he remains optimistic, adding, “I am happy with this second place, and I hope the victory will come soon.”

Franco Pellizotti, the team director, voiced pride in Zambanini’s performance: “We are very happy and proud of Edo… He did a very strong sprint… When you finish second in a Grand Tour stage, it is always something to take positively.”

The day was not without challenges for Team Bahrain Victorious, as Afonso Eulálio suffered a crash, yet he managed to retain the Maglia Bianca for the best young rider, though he sustained minor abrasions. Eulálio expressed, “A crash is never a good thing… Our ‘Zamba’ did a super job to take second place… I think the whole team can be happy with today.”

With no major shifts in the general classification, Eulálio sits fifth overall, while Damiano Caruso holds ninth. The Giro heads into Stage 19, a pivotal mountain stage from Feltre to Alleghe, with Team Bahrain Victorious ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
