Bilbao 4th at Eschborn-Frankfurt
# Pello Bilbao Secures Fourth Place at Eschborn-Frankfurt
Pello Bilbao of Bahrain Victorious delivered a commendable performance, finishing fourth in the highly competitive Eschborn-Frankfurt race, part of the WorldTour calendar. This year’s edition of the one-day race was marked by a challenging course and aggressive tactics from the riders.
The race opened with an early breakaway that was effectively managed during the initial stages. However, the intensity heightened as the cyclists navigated the climbs in the Taunus, leading to a gradual thinning of the peloton. The pivotal moment unfolded on the final ascent, where a select group broke away, gaining a slim lead as they raced towards Frankfurt.
Despite the peloton’s valiant effort to close the gap in the last few kilometers, the front group maintained their advantage and ultimately contested the finish. Georg Zimmermann from Lotto Intermarche emerged victorious, followed closely by Tom Pidcock of the Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team in second place, and Ben Tulett of Team Visma – Lease a Bike in third. Bilbao’s fourth place finish reflects his strong positioning and racing strategy in the final stretch.
Reflecting on his performance, Bilbao stated, “It was a difficult race to understand and at one point I thought our best chance would be to go with Zambanini in the sprint, because the race was not going so hard and seemed quite controlled by the fastest guys. But then, in the last two climbs, the race exploded. We played our cards in the best way, made the race harder and the boys were excellent, very aggressive. I was able to join the big move with around 25 km to go.”
Bilbao continued, “In the end, it’s a bit of a strange feeling, because when you see the line while sprinting and you are so close to victory, then losing the podium in the last moment is a pity. But on the other hand, I know we did our best. It was difficult to play it in a different way.”
Bahrain Victorious’ sports director Aart Vierhouten praised Bilbao’s efforts, saying, “First of all, we are happy with Pello’s result, which was really great again after all the Classics. Once more a top 10, and even a top five with fourth place. He deserved the podium.” He also noted the team’s strategy and execution throughout the race, highlighting that “Afonso did a really great job on the climbs to increase the pace and split the peloton.”
As the team shifts its focus, Vierhouten emphasized their confidence moving forward, stating, “We go home confident, with some riders heading towards the Giro… It’s a good result with fourth place.” Bilbao’s display of determination and strategic racing once again establishes him as a formidable contender in professional cycling, even as he approaches the later stages of his career.
