In an exhilarating second stage of O Gran Camiño, Team Visma | Lease a Bike demonstrated their formidable presence on the roads. Following the opening time trial, the squad took on a challenging 150-kilometer route from Vilalba to Barreiro, which featured two categorized climbs, culminating in the intense ascent of Alto de Noceda.
The stage kicked off with a daring breakaway of eight riders, gaining substantial ground as the peloton maintained a steady pace. Early on, Team Visma | Lease a Bike riders showcased their vigilance, positioning themselves consistently at the front. As the race neared its final climb, the gap to the breakaway rapidly diminished, with the young team driving the momentum. The final attackers were caught just fifteen kilometers from the finish line.
As the peloton surged onto the Alto de Noceda, it splintered into multiple groups. Team Visma | Lease a Bike was well-represented in a cohesive front pack of approximately twenty cyclists. Among them were notable names such as Goszczurny, Schiffer, and Mernik, alongside Tijmen Graat and Jørgen Nordhagen. In the sprint to the line, Goszczurny crossed in fourth, with teammates Schiffer and Mernik finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. Nordhagen also made significant progress, climbing to third place in the general classification.
Reflecting on the team’s performance, sports director Robert Wagner stated, “We finished with three riders in the top ten of the stage results, so there are certainly still areas for improvement that we can take forward. The goal was to sprint for the win with Patryk, which unfortunately just fell short. What stands out most to me is how strong our riders were today. We had five riders in the decisive move, which says enough. Our other goal was to defend Jørgen’s position in the general classification, and we did that very well. We’re looking ahead to the coming stages with confidence.”
