# Pello Bilbao to Retire from Professional Cycling After 2026 Season
Pello Bilbao has officially announced that he will retire from professional cycling at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The 36-year-old Basque rider revealed his decision during Stage 6 of the Itzulia Basque Country, sharing the moment with enthusiastic home crowds.
Bilbao embarked on his professional career in 2011 with Euskaltel-Euskadi and has since enjoyed a prolific journey in the sport. Since joining Bahrain Victorious in 2020, he has become a key figure in the team, completing seven seasons with them by the end of this year. His contributions have been vital, both on and off the bike.
Before the curtain comes down on his career, Bilbao boasts an impressive list of achievements. His résumé includes two stage wins at the Giro d’Italia and a standout stage victory at the Tour de France. Often regarded for his consistency, he has consistently ranked among the top in general classifications, frequently securing podium finishes at both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France.
Beyond his victories, Bilbao has earned a reputation as a savvy and dependable rider, pivotal in team successes across Grand Tours and one-day races while mentoring younger teammates throughout his tenure.
Reflecting on his decision to retire, Bilbao expressed gratitude for his path, revealing, “When I look back on my career, I would say that, first of all, I was really lucky to be born in the Basque Country, in a place where cycling is so special. There is a deep cycling culture, with so many people involved in schools and races, all helping to create opportunities.” He added, “That environment made it easier to enjoy the sport, to perform, and to show what I was capable of.”
Bilbao reminisced about his early days, noting, “For me, it always felt like a game at the beginning. I was just playing at being a cyclist with my friends… I went from being an unknown rider to achieving big results in the biggest races.” He particularly highlighted his win at the Tour de France as both intense and emotional, saying, “That moment showed me how intense and emotional this sport can be.”
As he prepares to mark his final season, Bilbao acknowledges the altered dynamics of racing, admitting, “In some races, I’ve even felt more nervous than usual, knowing it could be the last time I experience them. Every race, every moment feels more significant.” He is determined to leave his mark one last time, stating, “I just want to show people what I am capable of, one last time.”
Bilbao concluded by reflecting on the uncertainty of retirement, sharing his mixed feelings, “It has truly been a pleasure… I know I will miss cycling in many ways, but I also understand how demanding it is to keep performing at the highest level year after year.”
Milan Eržen, a representative from Bahrain Victorious, praised Bilbao’s contributions: “Pello has been a fantastic rider for us over many years… We hope he enjoys every moment in the peloton and continues to create great memories while also looking ahead to continued success beyond his cycling career.”
With his departure on the horizon, Bilbao’s legacy within the cycling community is undoubtedly secured, as fans and teammates alike prepare to celebrate his final season.
