Veenhoven secures third place in Tour of Bruges
# Nienke Veenhoven Claims Third Place in Challenging Tour of Bruges
The ninth edition of the Tour of Bruges proved to be a test of resilience as riders faced wind, rain, and hail over a grueling 144 kilometers of flat terrain. Despite the harsh conditions, the peloton maintained a controlled pace, resulting in few significant breakaway attempts.
As the race transitioned to the local laps around Bruges, the anticipated echelons failed to form. In keeping with previous editions, the competition culminated in a thrilling bunch sprint. Nienke Veenhoven, racing for Team Visma | Lease a Bike Women, was skillfully positioned by her team as they navigated the final moments of the race. Although the 22-year-old Dutch cyclist put up a strong fight, she ultimately took third place behind Elisa Balsamo and race winner Carys Lloyd.
Reflecting on her performance, Veenhoven expressed her satisfaction: “I’m happy I could reward the team today with a podium finish. There was a lot of tension because everyone was alert for potential echelons. The wind was favorable for that, but unfortunately it wasn’t strong enough to create splits. In the end, we got a nice bunch sprint.”
Veenhoven is optimistic about her future races, stating, “Third place is definitely a solid result to build on. I head into In Flanders Fields – In Wevelgem on Sunday with a good feeling.” She elaborated on her strategy: “We handled the finale well as a team. We took the initiative in the peloton early on. In the closing stages, I chose to follow the wheels of the Lidl-Trek riders. I got boxed in briefly on the final straight, but luckily found space to start my sprint.”
Team sports director Jos van Emden praised the team’s performance and Veenhoven’s achievement: “We rode a fairly anonymous race, but moved up at the right moment. With just over ten kilometers to go, our riders took control of the peloton. That effort was rewarded with Nienke’s third place. I’m very happy for her that everything came together today. The Tour of Bruges is a major race, so it’s great to see her perform at this level.”
The results of the Tour of Bruges highlighted the competitive field, with the podium finishing as follows:
1. Carys Lloyd (Movistar Team) – 03:31:23
2. Elisa Balsamo (Lidl – Trek) – +00:00:00
3. Nienke Veenhoven (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) – +00:00:00
As the team looks forward, Veenhoven’s performance has set a strong precedent heading into upcoming challenges.
