Clément Russo enters the top 10 in Montargis
# Clément Russo Shines with Top 10 Finish in Paris–Nice
In a thrilling display of talent, Clément Russo stepped away from his usual lead-out duties to secure an impressive top 10 finish in Montargis during the second stage of Paris–Nice on Monday. Demonstrating his sprinting prowess, Russo navigated the crowded final stretch to place ninth, showcasing his potential as a formidable sprinter.
The stage, stretching 187 kilometres from Épône to Montargis, initially appeared to be the least taxing of the race. With minimal elevation gains and favorable weather conditions across Yvelines, Essonne, Seine-et-Marne, and Loiret, expectations were high. “There was a bit of nervousness at the start because of the wind, but it was forecast not to be significant, and once the race got underway it turned out to be even less,” noted William Green.
The day’s dynamics unfolded typically, with a few riders initially breaking away before being reeled back in around sixty kilometres from the finish. A crash briefly disrupted the peloton after an intermediate sprint, but the real drama began in the final twenty kilometres when Dan Hoole attempted a daring move to outpace the sprinters.
“It’s quite impressive,” remarked Green, recognizing Russo’s significant effort. Despite being a lead-out man by trade, Russo seized the opportunity, positioning himself strategically in the front ranks as the race climaxed. “Today was his opportunity,” said Green. “And honestly, he did a super job. We know he’s got this amazing feeling in the final; we already saw it at the Ruta del Sol. He showed it again today and executed the plan perfectly.”
Russo’s tenacity paid off as he maneuvered through the leading group to find a spot in the final sprint. Although he finished behind Max Kanter, who took the stage victory, Russo’s performance left a mark. “This result seems like nothing, but at the same time it’s really something when you think that he did this all alone in the final five kilometres,” Green emphasized, highlighting the significance of Russo’s achievement.
Now that Russo has secured his first top 10 of the season, he prepares to return to his domestique role for the crucial team time trial on Tuesday. “The goal is clear: to improve on the past years,” concluded Green. “This is the main objective, and we want to be in the top 10. We have a nice team, and we did a good preparation. We’ll make the maximum effort and assess things tomorrow evening.”
