Laporte new leader in Tour of Holland after second place on VAM-berg
# Christophe Laporte Takes Overall Lead in Tour of Holland Following Strong Performance
In a thrilling stage at the Tour of Holland, Christophe Laporte of Team Visma | Lease a Bike surged into the overall lead after securing a second-place finish at the challenging 159-kilometer stage, concluding on the famed VAM-berg. The peloton began the day’s race in Emmen, confronting a grueling route that featured twelve local laps around the relentless climb.
A breakaway group of seven riders initially gained a two-minute advantage as they approached the local circuits. However, the demanding nature of the VAM-berg climb gradually fragmented the peloton. With 30 kilometers remaining, Laporte, alongside teammates Olav Kooij and Julien Vermote, found themselves in a select group positioned to capitalize on the unfolding race dynamics.
Laporte, eager to contend for both stage victory and the overall classification, executed a decisive attack. He was quickly joined by Lukas Kubis, and together they efficiently bridged the gap to the breakaway with just over ten kilometers to go. Despite their best efforts and facing repeated attacks from others, it was early escapee Timo de Jong who proved strongest on the final ascent, finishing first. Laporte crossed the line in second, which allowed him to take the lead in the overall rankings.
“It was my goal to win today, but I also had to make the choice to go all-in for the overall classification,” Laporte reflected post-race. “With a few laps to go, I decided to accelerate. Julien and Olav kept a high pace in the peloton, and then it was up to me to close the gap to the front. I gave everything to go for the stage win as well, but in the end, the tank was empty. Tomorrow, the key will be to stay out of trouble in the tricky stage so I can hopefully secure the overall victory.”
The stage results were as follows:
1. **Timo de Jong** (VolkerWessels Cycling Team) – 03:32:49
2. **Christophe Laporte** (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) – +00:00:00
3. **Lukáš Kubiš** (Unibet Tietema Rockets) – +00:00:00
With this performance, the current overall standings place Laporte at the top with a cumulative time of 06:27:30, followed closely by Kubiš in second and Jakob Söderqvist (Lidl – Trek) in third.
As the Tour of Holland progresses, all eyes will be on Laporte as he seeks to solidify his position as the race leader.
