Kooij leaves good impression in final stage of Renewi Tour and finishes fifth overall

# Olav Kooij Impresses with Fifth-Place Finish at Renewi Tour Finale

In an exhilarating conclusion to the Renewi Tour, Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s Olav Kooij showcased his talent by finishing fifth overall after a strong performance on the challenging circuit around Leuven.

The stage witnessed a brave attempt from four riders, including Edoardo Affini, who formed an early breakaway, exceeding a three-minute lead. However, with just 50 kilometers remaining, the determined peloton reeled them in, setting the stage for an intense finish.

Kooij, supported well by his formidable teammates throughout the demanding course, found himself in a strong position as they approached the final climbs. Although he maintained his position in the reduced peloton, he ultimately fell short in the bunch sprint and could not contest for the stage victory. However, his impressive week earned him a well-deserved fifth place in the general classification.

“Olav was really strong today,” remarked sports director Marc Reef. He added, “It was a tough stage in which Edoardo showed himself in the break, but he didn’t get much room. In the finale, we were able to support Olav well, and he made a big impression, although unfortunately he couldn’t sprint for the win.”

Reflecting on the week’s performances, Reef expressed satisfaction with the results, stating, “We had a good week. With Olav, we won a stage, and on top of that, he finished fifth overall, which is a great result. Christophe Laporte also had a strong week, and we saw him getting better day by day.”

The final stage results highlight the competitive spirit of the event, with Arnaud De Lie of Lotto taking the stage victory in a time of 3:59:38, closely followed by Mathieu van der Poel from Alpecin – Deceuninck and Dries De Bondt of Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team.

Kooij’s solid performance at the Renewi Tour marks a significant step in his cycling career, promising an exciting future for this talented 23-year-old sprinter.
