Lorena Wiebes secured her tenth victory of the season
Lorena Wiebes secured her tenth victory of the season at the Elmos Dwars door het Hageland. She beat Fleur Moors with a strong sprint. “I’ve seen enough bikes today,” said Wiebes after her victory. ‘I had to change a wheel earlier in the race, so I was already on my way with my spare bike. On the last gravel section, I got a puncture. I would have preferred to ride my own bike, but riding up the Citadel with a flat tyre was not an option. Waiting for the team car would not have been wise either though, so I took a teammate’s bike. It turned out to be a smaller model, so the saddle was too low for me.’The cobblestones on the Citadel were slippery due to the rain, which was not ideal. For this reason, I did not want to take too many risks, especially in the corners. My rear wheel kept slipping. Fortunately, I was still able to sprint, although it was far from ideal. After competing in the UAE Tour, Le Samyn des Dames, Milan–San Remo, the Classic Brugge–De Panne, Gent–Wevelgem, the first stage of the Tour of Burgos and the final stage of the Tour of Britain, Wiebes secured her tenth victory of the season in Dwars door het Hageland. She also became European Omnium champion on the track this year and won the Marly Gravel race.
