GC leader Zingle forced to abandon 4 Jours de Dunkerque after crash in stage four

In the penultimate stage of the 4 Jours de Dunkerque, the peloton rode from La Chapelle d’Armentières to Cassel. In Cassel, the riders completed five local laps featuring several short but steep climbs. In pursuit of the early breakaway, both Hagenes and classification leader Zingle made a strong impression. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike duo rode attentively throughout the stage.

Around 25 kilometers from the finish, Zingle was involved in a crash. The unlucky Frenchman crashed in a corner and was forced to abandon the race. Hagenes also hit the ground, but he managed to rejoin the peloton. After regrouping and recovering, Hagenes re-entered the fight for the stage victory. On the uphill finish, the 21-year-old Norwegian sprinted to seventh place. He now moves up to fifth overall. The stage win went to Samuel Watson.

“It’s a pity, as an overall victory with Axel was definitely within reach tomorrow”

DS Frans Maassen

Sports director Frans Maassen reflected on an unfortunate day for his squad: “It’s obviously very bitter that Axel had to leave the race in this way. He was really feeling strong today. Along the way, he even picked up some bonus seconds, and together with Per, he was always well positioned. Per was also involved in the crash, but he managed to continue. It’s very impressive that he was still able to contest the stage win today. We’re very disappointed, as an overall victory with Axel was definitely within reach tomorrow.”
