The 62nd Laigueglia Trophy presented in Genoa.

The Transparency Room of the Region of Liguria today hosted the official presentation of the 62nd Trofeo Laigueglia, the opening classic of the Italian cycling calendar, scheduled for March 5. The event, which boasts a prestigious history, represents one of the most eagerly awaited appointments on the international cycling scene and is organized by the Municipality of Laigueglia with the technical direction of Gruppo Sportivo Emilia. The presentation was attended by Laigueglia Mayor Giorgio Manfredi, Regional Councillor Simona Ferro, Gruppo Sportivo Emilia President Adriano Amici and, via telephone link, Roberto Pella, president of the Professional Cycling League, who emphasized the extensive television coverage at the international level. The race, in which 175 riders will participate, is part of the Challenge Regione Liguria, together with the Giro dell’Appennino, consolidating the link between sport and territory, and is valid as the first round of the Coppa delle Regioni, the new classification devised by the Professional Cycling League of the Italian Cycling Federation that groups Italian races. During the presentation, the initiatives related to the event were also illustrated, the first prize “La Fuga,” a work by Laigueglia sculptor Giovanni Madianiti, was presented. In the early afternoon, during the course of the race, a conference sponsored by Novo Nordisk, a Danish multinational pharmaceutical company that sponsors an American team composed of athletes with diabetes, will be held in Via Mazzini – the place of the start and the awards ceremony. Leading diabetologists from Liguria and Mayor Giorgio Manfredi will participate in the debate. In addition, side events will include a drawing contest dedicated to school children. The route promises to be enthralling and will offer a great show, with teams ready to do battle and many young talents to keep an eye on.” In the coming days the main entrants will be announced THE ROUTE The route of the Laigueglia Trophy repeats the pattern of the most recent editions. After a first valley section and two Gran Premi della Montagna – Cima Paravenna and Testico – the race will get into its stride with the final circuit, to be repeated four times. The ascent of Colla Micheri (2 km at 8.4 percent with peaks at 14 percent), interspersed with the Capo Mele climb, will be the centerpiece of the selection. The last 40 km, without respite, promise spectacle and tussle among the protagonists. The finish is scheduled in Via Roma in Laigueglia, with a final straight that will allow a gripping epilogue after a selective race.
