This year the race takes on a special significance, as it marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of the great champion from Romagna and does so with the subtitle “2004 – 2024, twenty years without Marco,” by the way the first edition of is held precisely in 2024, a few months after the passing of the champion from Romagna.
The race organized by the Gruppo Sportivo Emilia and supported by the Panathlon Club Cesena, chaired by Dionigio Dionigi with vice-president Pino Buda, was officially presented this morning in the Council Hall of the Municipal Palace of Cesena in the presence of the Mayor of Cesena, Enzo Lattuca, the Mayor of Cesenatico Matteo Gozzoli, Panathlon President Dionigio Dionigi, Roberto Pella, President of the Professional Cycling League, the President of the Gruppo Sportivo Emilia, Adriano Amici and Marco Pantani’s parents. The “Marco Pantani Memorial” is not just a race, but a moment of reflection, celebration and passion for cycling; it is an opportunity for all of us to remember a champion who left an indelible imprint in the hearts of all fans. Saturday, September 14 will see a partial return to the past for the Pantani Memorial, which, after 12 years, once again sets the start in the city of Cesena. After about 23 kilometers, the race will pass through Sala di Cesenatico, then veer back in the direction of Cesena. Having crossed the Via Emilia, the race will head for the hills. These are the first short but challenging tears in the stretch of road that leads toward the entrance of the Cesena/Diolaguardia route. The 21-kilometer circuit, which characterizes the central part of the race, will be to be repeated 5 times. Having passed the GPM finish line located in the Diolaguardia locality, whose 5 passes will be valid to determine the special classification, one will enter the second part, mainly downhill. At the end of the fifth complete lap, one will exit the circuit at the same point where the entrance will take place. In fact, one will travel backwards along the same road previously followed, facing a rather technical downhill section, before finding the plain again at Calisese. At this point, they will have to face about 20 kilometers before reaching Cesenatico to face the now well-known final circuit, characterized by two long opposite straight stretches to be repeated 4 times. At the first passage over the finish line, placed as usual in Viale Carducci, at the monument to Marco Pantani, there will then be 4 rounds left, for a total of 20 kilometers, before crowning the winner of the 2024 edition of the “Marco Pantani Memorial.” Twenty-five teams will participate in the race, among them eight World Teams
