Markus outsmarts sprinters and solos to victory in Veenendaal – Veenendaal Classic
The course, consisting of four laps of 35 kilometers, featured two obstacles: the Grebbeberg and the Paardenveld. After a group of seven riders was caught with sixteen kilometers to go, Markus saw her chance to attack. The Dutch time trial champion immediately gained a gap on the soaking wet road, but never more than fifteen seconds.
The peloton did everything to catch Markus, but the runner-up of La Vuelta Femenina held on cleverly, delivering her team its seventh victory of the season. “I’m super happy with this. My dad sent me a message this morning: ‘The Markus family hasn’t won this race yet’. Dad, here it is,” Markus said after her impressive solo.
“I knew I had an advantage with the many corners and rainy roads.”

“On the final climb of the Paardenveld I was eager to give it a try. At first I was disappointed that I was boxed in for a long time, because I thought it would be too short to get away. Eventually I was able to find a gap and got away solo. The peloton was always close behind me, but I knew I had an advantage with the many corners and rainy roads. I just kept going and thought: let’s see where this ends. Luckily, I managed to stay away and crossed the finish line solo.”
