Koen Bouwman Emerges as the Strongest in Stage 3 of Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali
The stage with start and finish in Riccione during the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali proved to be one of the toughest, showcasing the resilience and strength of the riders. Team Visma | Lease a Bike entered the stage with confidence, and their strategic moves led to a thrilling finish.
During the stage, rider Milan Vader initiated an attack that saw him joined by seven other riders. Despite the challenging terrain, the group’s lead was never more significant than a minute and a half. However, it was Bouwman who seized the opportunity to break away just under 20 kilometers from the finish, with his companion Matthys. Together, they managed to create a substantial gap and hold off the peloton until the end, with Bouwman demonstrating his strength in the final sprint.
Reflecting on the unexpected attack, sports director Robert Wagner commented, “It wasn’t agreed that Koen would attack, but he is such an experienced rider who knows when the right moment has arrived.” Bouwman expressed his joy at the victory, stating, “I am very happy that I was able to put my hands in the air again. It was about two years ago, and then of course it’s enormously satisfying to win again.”
Looking ahead to the final two days of competition, Bouwman expressed the team’s clear goal, saying, “To try to defend the jersey and hopefully take it home.” Sports director Wagner commended the team’s performance, highlighting the efforts of other riders like Milan Vader and Johannes Staune-Mittet.
The race results showed Bouwman claiming the top spot in Stage 3, further solidifying his dominance in the overall rankings of Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali. With a strategic and impressive display of strength, Bouwman’s victory serves as a testament to the team’s tactics and determination in the face of challenging competition.
