Wout van Aert Closes Cross-Season with Impressive Victory in Benidorm
After a successful training camp in Spain, Wout van Aert concluded the cyclocross season with a remarkable win in Benidorm. His goal was clear from the onset: to end the cross-season on a high note. “In contrast to previous years, I did not specifically prepare for this period. My focus is on the road, but when I line up at the start, I certainly will not hold back. I want to give it my all and leave the cross-season with a good feeling.”
Van Aert faced a challenging start in Benidorm as his pedal came loose shortly after the start, forcing him to make a significant recovery. By the third lap, he rejoined the front group, reigniting all possibilities. For a brief moment, Van Aert broke away with Mathieu van der Poel, but they were caught up by a large group of pursuers.
With Van der Poel committing an error, Van Aert and Vanthourenhout then rode away from the pack. In the final lap, Van Aert made a decisive move, overpowering Vanthourenhout. Despite a fall and a broken saddle after the last set of barriers, he managed to fend off his compatriot at the finish line.
