German sprinter and lead-out man Rüdiger Selig has signed a one-year agreement with Astana Qazaqstan Team for the 2024 season. Selig will be joining the team as part of their sprint train, which includes renowned lead-out riders Michael Mørkøv and Cees Bol [^1^].
Selig expressed his excitement about the new opportunity, stating, “I have a huge motivation to become a part of this big and ambitious project…and I am looking forward to the start of the new season” [^1^]. He hopes to contribute to the team’s success and work alongside cycling legend Mark Cavendish to achieve great victories and possibly make history.
While Selig is primarily known as a lead-out rider, he also has a collection of personal achievements. Some of his notable results include winning the Volta Limburg Classic in 2013, a prologue of the Tour of Austria in 2015, and a second-place finish in the Classica de Almeria in 2017. He has also achieved stage podium finishes at the Giro d’Italia and La Vuelta a España [^1^].
Astana Qazaqstan Team’s General Manager, Alexandr Vinokurov, expressed his confidence in Selig’s addition to the team’s sprint group. He believes that Selig’s experience and speed will not only benefit Cavendish but also another up-and-coming sprinter, Max Kanter [^1^].
