Tour De Langkawi: Sasha Weemaes Claims First Pro Win in Stage 7
Belgian cyclist Sasha Weemaes of Human Powered Health secured his first professional win after narrowly beating Arvid De Kleijn in a close bunch sprint at the end of Stage 7 in Seremban. Weemaes, who came in second in Melaka the previous day, crossed the finish line first with a time of 2:31.45s. This victory comes after several near misses for Weemaes throughout the season.
In a perfectly executed sprint, Weemaes managed to overtake De Kleijn in the final 25 metres to claim the win. “It was a hard win for me, the tactic was to get behind Arvid’s wheel, move out to the right side in the last 25 metres, and time my sprint perfectly,” said Weemaes. He expressed his gratitude to his teammates for their support and hard work.
With the race coming to a close, the final stage will offer sprinters one last opportunity for a victory. Briton Simon Carr of EF Education-EasyPost is expected to clinch the overall champion title. Carr currently holds a 49 second lead in the general classification, securing the PETRONAS Green Jersey. Meanwhile, Simon Pellaud of Tudor Cycling Team is set to claim the TOURISM MALAYSIA Red Polka Dot jersey as the mountains classification leader.
De Kleijn, who hoped to secure a triple win, expressed disappointment after finishing second to Weemaes. Despite this setback, he remains in the lead for the points classification and is determined to give his best performance in the final stage.
The race will conclude with a flat 156.5km stage from Setia Alam to the heart of Kuala Lumpur, offering sprinters a final chance to shine on the podium.
