# The 2023 Road European Championships Set to Take Place in the Netherlands
The province of Drenthe in the Netherlands is gearing up to host the 2023 Road European Championships from September 20 to 24. The event will see the participation of over 850 athletes from 40 countries, competing in 14 categories. The championship will feature road races and time trials for Junior, U23, and Elite Men and Women categories, as well as a Mixed Relay event.
Some of the top contenders for the Elite Road race include Alexander Kristoff from Norway and Italy’s Matteo Trentin, Elia Viviani, and Giacomo Nizzolo – all previous continental title-winners. Sprinter Pascal Ackermann from Germany, Briton Ethan Hayter, and former world champions Mads Pedersen, Julian Alaphilippe, and Rui Costa will also be vying for the top spot. In the Time-Trial event, multiple champion Filippo Ganna from Italy, defending champion Stefan Bisseger from Switzerland, and 2018 Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas will be among the strong contenders.
In the women’s race, reigning European champion Lorena Wiebes from the Netherlands will face tough competition from a stellar lineup, including World Road and Time-Trial Champion Lotte Kopecky, Elisa Balsamo from Italy, and Cecile Ludwig from Denmark. Local athlete Demi Vollering, who has had a remarkable season with wins at the Tour de France, Strade Bianche, Flèche Wallonne, and the Amstel Gold Race, will also be a rider to watch out for.
Enrico Della Casa, President of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme, expressed his excitement about the event taking place in the Netherlands, a country known for its cycling culture. He also thanked the Dutch Cycling Federation, the Province of Drenthe, and Courage Events for their commitment to organizing a successful championship.
