Zoe Bäckstedt and Antonia Niedermaier 1-2 at European U23 ITT
Zoe Bäckstedt and Antonia Niedermaier showcased their time trial abilities at the European U23 ITT championship. Bäckstedt took home the gold medal, finishing 58 seconds ahead of her CANYON//SRAM Racing teammate Niedermaier. The race, held in Drenthe, the Netherlands, featured a 20.6km flat, non-technical course.
Bäckstedt revealed that she had a strategic plan in mind for the race, stating, “It was very much a power course with all of the straight sections and hardly any technical parts to it. It was more or less push as hard as possible until the finish.” She credited her team coaches for their guidance and helpful radio communication throughout the race. Bäckstedt maintained a strong lead throughout, taking home her first European title on the road.
Niedermaier, on the other hand, acknowledged the challenges of the course, saying, “The pacing strategy was not too complicated on this type of course. It was just all out from the start to the finish line.” Despite the course not playing to her strengths and having less than ideal preparation due to illness, Niedermaier managed to secure the silver medal.
Both riders showed their resilience and determination, proving themselves on the U23 stage despite their young ages. Their performances in the European U23 ITT serve as a testament to their talent and promising futures in the sport.
