Remco Evenepoel narrowly misses fourth victory at La Vuelta
Remco Evenepoel came close to securing another victory on the penultimate day of the Vuelta a España. The Belgian cyclist, who has already conquered three summit finishes in this year’s Grand Tour, was part of a 30-man breakaway that managed to put a significant gap between them and the red jersey group. Even though he made a valiant effort, Evenepoel had to settle for second place after a fierce sprint.
Soudal Quick-Step’s team performed exceptionally well throughout the stage, shutting down all the attacks and setting a steady tempo at the front. Evenepoel’s teammate, Mattia Cattaneo, supported him by ensuring that the leaders up the road remained within reach. Once Cattaneo’s role was completed, Evenepoel managed to catch up with the leaders on the descent.
The five riders in the breakaway worked together effectively, and Evenepoel entered the final kilometer in a favorable position. However, Wout Poels surprised everyone by launching his sprint earlier than expected. Evenepoel tried to catch up, but the finish line arrived too quickly, leaving him in second place.
Reflecting on the stage, Evenepoel said, “It was a hard stage, but we did our best. Mattia, James, and Louis were amazing, pulling the whole stage and working tirelessly for me. I felt good and was confident in my sprint, but Poels surprised us all. Despite everything, I don’t have any regrets.”
Evenepoel has now moved up to 12th place in the general classification after the penultimate stage. He is looking forward to the final stage in Madrid and riding one last time with his teammates.
