Dylan Groenewegen narrowly misses victory at Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen
Dylan Groenewegen of Team Jayco AlUla came close to winning at the one-day Belgian race Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen, finishing in a tight second place. Groenewegen battled head-to-head with Jasper Philipsen, but ultimately fell short by a narrow margin.
Groenewegen’s teammate Luka Mezgec provided excellent support, positioning him well for the final sprint. However, Groenewegen launched his sprint a second too late, allowing Philipsen to take the win in a close photo finish.
Reflecting on the race, Groenewegen commented, “Philipsen is almost unbeatable this year… He went at the right moment, while I started the sprint a second too late.” Despite the disappointment of not winning, Groenewegen remains motivated and focused on securing a victory in future races.
The Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen featured four early breakaway riders, who were eventually caught on the penultimate lap. Due to the challenging nature of the circuit, maintaining good positioning was difficult. Nevertheless, Groenewegen’s well-coordinated sprint train managed to position him for a shot at the podium.
Groenewegen’s second-place finish adds to his successful season, which includes six victories. Looking ahead, he is determined to continue his pursuit of a win, with several more races to come in Belgium this year.
The official results of the 2023 Kampioenschap van Vlaanderen are as follows:
1. Jasper Philipsen – 3:34:28
2. Dylan Groenewegen (Team Jayco AlUla) – ST
3. Fabio Jakobsen – ST
