Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard of Jumbo-Visma takes stage win and closes gap in overall standings
September 12th, 2023 – In a stunning display of climbing prowess, Jonas Vingegaard of Jumbo-Visma secured a victorious moment as he won stage 16 of La Vuelta 23. Vingegaard attacked with just 4 kilometers to go, leaving his rivals behind and opening up a gap of over a minute. This impressive performance put him in a much stronger position in the overall standings, now trailing Sepp Kuss by just 29 seconds.
The stage, which featured an unprecedented climb to Bejes, proved to be a highly intense battle for the break. After several attempts, a group of six riders eventually made the break halfway through the stage. However, Jumbo-Visma remained in control, keeping the gap under 1 minute and 20 seconds.
It was on the final climb that Vingegaard made his move, attacking with just 4 kilometers remaining. His teammates from Jumbo-Visma drove the peloton to maintain the gap, allowing Vingegaard to increase his lead. Primoz Roglic, also from Jumbo-Visma, reacted later but was unable to catch Vingegaard.
Following his victory, Vingegaard now sits in second place overall, just 29 seconds behind his teammate Sepp Kuss. Roglic dropped to third place, with a gap of 1 minute and 33 seconds. Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates trails by 2 minutes and 33 seconds.
With the third week of La Vuelta 23 leading the riders to Madrid, the upcoming stage will see the riders face the challenging Alto de l’Angliru. With Vingegaard’s impressive performance, the excitement and anticipation for the rest of the race are sure to heighten as the peloton continues to push for victory.
