Eulálio Keeps Maglia Bianca After 10 Days in Maglia Rosa
# Eulálio Retains Maglia Bianca Amidst Giro d’Italia Challenges
In a thrilling display of endurance and strategy, Afonso Eulálio from Bahrain Victorious successfully defended his position with the Maglia Bianca following Stage 14 of the Giro d’Italia, despite relinquishing the Maglia Rosa after ten impressive days in the lead. The stage, measuring 133 kilometers from Aosta to Pila, marked a significant turning point as it featured five challenging climbs culminating in a summit finish.
Jonas Vingegaard of Team Visma – Lease a Bike triumphed in the stage, securing the Maglia Rosa with a commanding performance, while Felix Gall from Decathlon CMA CGM Team and Jai Hindley of Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe rounded out the top three finishers, placing second and third, respectively. Eulálio conquered the difficult terrain, finishing just 2:26 behind Vingegaard, solidifying his second-place standing in the overall general classification.
Throughout his journey in the Maglia Rosa, Eulálio showcased remarkable strength across various stages, including a gritty first mountain finish at Blockhaus and an intense individual time trial. His teammate Damiano Caruso has been a pivotal presence, consistently supporting him in crucial moments, including the strenuous climb in Pila.
Eulálio expressed appreciation for his team’s efforts after the stage: “Today was another fight. [Visma] went all in for the stage in the final with Vingegaard, and for me, it was a very hard day. I just tried to give my best, stay focused, and keep fighting until the finish… Of course, losing the Maglia Rosa is not easy, but I kept the Maglia Bianca and I am still second overall. One more time, I want to say thank you to all the team. We keep fighting.”
Franco Pellizotti, part of the Bahrain Victorious team, shared insights into their strategy for the day: “Today’s stage went more or less as we expected. Visma set a strong pace already from the first climb, and with the heat, it became a very hard day… Afonso kept the Maglia Bianca and remains second overall. After a hard week, the riders will need some recovery now, and then we will look ahead to the third week.”
Eulálio’s continued perseverance places him in a favorable position as the Giro d’Italia progresses, with Team Bahrain Victorious aiming to build on their success in the coming stages.
